red lawn mower on healthy green grass - when is the best time of day to mow the lawn

If you’ve found your way to this blog, you’re more than likely wondering when is the best time of day to mow your lawn?

When it comes to lawn mowing, there’s rarely a one-size-fits-all answer as to when and how regularly you should be mowing the lawn. There are many different factors to take into consideration; what season is it? How has the weather been? When was the last time you mowed?

It’s commonplace for people to discuss the importance of knowing how regularly grass should be cut during different seasons, how long grass should be kept, what’s the best technique for mowing grass... but is there enough discussion surrounding when the best time of day to mow the grass is?

When is the best time of day to mow the grass?

Some people might think that the time of day the grass is cut makes no difference, but that isn’t true. No matter the season, it’s generally held that the best time of day to mow your lawn is either mid-morning or late afternoon.

So, why does when you mow your lawn matter? Typically the lawn is still wet from dew first thing in the morning, and wet grass isn’t ideal for mowing. If you’d like to learn more about why you should avoid mowing wet grass, check out this blog.

Waiting until mid-morning for the dew to dry leaves your lawn ready to be mowed! As the day moves on and we get into mid-day, particularly in the summer months, if your lawn still needs to be mowed we’d recommend waiting until late afternoon.

Midday is typically the hottest time of day which isn’t ideal for mowing, both because the heat can stress the grass, and can cause a lot of exhaustion to the mower! We’d recommend waiting until late afternoon for the temperature to drop before mowing your lawn.

It’s also worth noting that just because it’s mid-morning or late afternoon, that doesn’t automatically mean that it’s a good time for you to mow your lawn – there’s a lot more to take into consideration than just time of day, such as weather and season.
