ant infestation

If you're planning on getting your lawn and garden in ship-shape, it's important to be aware of certain pests that can ruin the appearance and quality of your lawn.

One of these pests is the renowned ant. They are tiny yet mighty when it comes to damaging your garden plants! In this blog, we'll go through some ways in which you can get rid of ants in your garden.

How to know if you have an ant infestation

Once you've noticed the eyesore that ants can create in your lawn, it can be hard to ignore the issue at hand.

Anthills are made from pieces of dug-up soil and dirt, and they provide an entrance to a below-ground ant nest. They're usually round in shape and raised above the surface of your lawn.

If you find anthills in your garden, then you can be pretty sure that there's an ant infestation beneath it. Don't panic, though - with a few simple methods you can say goodbye to your unwanted lodgers.

How to get rid of ants in your garden

If you have a major ant infestation, we'd firstly recommend that you get in touch with a lawn pest management specialist. This may be required if you find that the ants from your garden start making their way into your home!

If you have a minor ant infestation, then there are some methods you could try out yourself:

  • Allow the anthill to dry out in the sun
  • Brush the soil particles evenly across your lawn with a heavy-bristled brush
  • Dig into the nest using a trowel
  • Apply ant powder
  • Replace the soil or the grass

Its important to note that it's better to apply ant powder within the hole of the nest rather than on top of the surface of your lawn. This is to prevent you accidentally scorching the grass!

How do ants damage plants and lawns?

Ant infestations can ruin lawns and garden plants for a range of reasons. We've outlined just a few here...

1. They're unaesthetically appealing, ruining the overall style and appearance of your luscious garden.

2. They can make your lawn uneven which makes mowing and cutting more difficult.

3. They can disturb the soil surrounding plants while partaking in nest-building activities, resulting in uneven or stunted growth of plant roots.

How does ant powder kill ants?

Ant powder kills ants as it is made up of talcum powder and insecticides.

The talcum powder will damage the ants' pheromone trail, as well as absorbing into their skin and airways, killing them in a short amount of time. The insecticide within ant powder also has a residual effect which will act as a repellent barrier for other ants, and it will kill any ants within the covered area.
