Lawn rake

Looking after your lawn takes a lot of hard work and diligence. If you want to keep your grass in tip-top condition all year round, you're going to need the help of a few essential tools.

Here are some of the most important weapons in your outdoor arsenal - if any of these lawn care tools are missing from your garden shed, you may want to remedy that ASAP!

7 must-have lawn care tools

  • LAWN MOWER - We recommend mowing your lawn once a week (twice in summer). See our Lawn Mowing Tips for more information.

  • RAKE - A sturdy metal rake can be used to get rid of moss and thatch. You can also use it to clear away dead leaves when autumn arrives, although a plastic-headed rake may be more suitable for this task.

  • HOSE - Your lawn will begin to show signs of stress after approximately 1 week without moisture. If there's no rain forecast, you may need to get out the garden hose and water the grass yourself. Read our Lawn Watering Tips for further advice.

  • GRASS SHEARS - Handheld shears are ideal for sorting out uneven patches of grass or tidying up the edges of your lawn. If there's a part of your lawn that's difficult to mow properly (e.g. around the base of a tree), grass shears may be the answer.

  • WEED PULLER - A variety of weed-pulling tools are available to help you deal with those pesky lawn weeds. These range from daisy grubbers (see How to Remove Daisies) to long-handled claws.

  • SPREADER - Ideal for distributing fertiliser or grass seed evenly across your lawn. Handheld spreaders are ideal for small gardens, while wheeled carts are great if you're sowing / fertilising a larger area.

  • AERATOR - Aeration is the process of spiking holes in your lawn to loosen compacted soil, allowing moisture and air to flow more freely. There are lots of different aerator tools on the market - some feature a roller on the end of a long handle, while others look more like rakes or garden forks. You can even buy spikes that attach to the soles of your shoes!

Of course, if you don't have room for all of these tools - or if you'd simply prefer to leave the hard work to the pros - we at Lawn & Weed Expert can help. We can provide a bespoke lawn care service that's specifically tailored to your garden and its requirements. Give us a call on 0800 111 4958 to arrange your FREE lawn care survey.
