lawn overwatering

With the summer weather in full swing, it can be very easy to get carried away and start overwatering your lawn. Don't worry - it's a natural response to seeing your healthy lawn turn dry and patchy, but here's why you shouldn't start overwatering your lawn. It can actually cause more problems than you realise!

Overwatering can make your lawn spongy

If you're overwatering your lawn, you may find that the grass holds onto the extra moisture instead of absorbing it. This can result in a sponge-like lawn that has a soggy appearance and squishy feel.

As we'll go on to find out, these conditions are not suitable for grass growth, however, they are suitable for other plants and insects so you may find a few unwanted visitors if you overwater your lawn.

Overwatering encourages fungi growth

When you start overwatering your lawn, there is the risk of creating optimal conditions for fungi, resulting in health and safety dangers for pets and children.

Fungi love to absorb water, so if you find that your lawn is holding onto a lot of extra water, fungi are sure to thrive by robbing these nutrients from your grass. If you'd like to confirm the presence of fungi in your overwatered lawn, look out for colourful growths on the grass blades or discolouration across your lawn.

Overwatering can attract weeds

If you're overwatering your lawn, you may find weeds that love waterlogged lawns. If you start to see weeds growing and they begin to overtake your lawn, this could be a sign that your lawn is being overwatered and is struggling to get the nutrients it needs to thrive.

Overwatering can suffocate your lawn and stunt growth

When overwatering a lawn, a layer of partially decomposed plant material called thatch can begin to layer over your grass. Usually, thatch is beneficial as organisms can break down the thatch to provide your lawn with nutrients, but when your lawn is overwatered, it does the opposite and suffocates your lawn of the oxygen it needs instead.
