watering a lawn

With the UK summer heat coming and going, it can be hard to predict the weather. This can cause a problem when deciding when you'd like to water your lawn. For instance, is it hydrated enough from the occasional bouts of British rain? Or does it need some extra water to recover from the sudden dry spells?

All of these questions are extremely common from avid gardeners. After all, we all want to do the best for our lawns and keep them as healthy as possible. One of the most common questions we're asked is: should I water my lawn every day in summer? Well, we're here to give you the answer!

Can I water my lawn every day?

If you're here for the quick answer, then you're in the right place. You shouldn't water your lawn every day in summer, or in any season for that matter! Instead of watering your lawn every day, you should only water your lawn if there has been a prolonged dry spell.

For instance, if your lawn hasn't had any natural rainwater for a prolonged period of time, it's probably time for you to intervene by giving it a top-up watering.

Depending on your location's weather, this could mean 3-4 times a week, once a week, or even once every 10 days. It's important to get to know the needs of your grass. For instance, different types of lawn grass requires different care and maintenance.

Alternatively, if you've had a few spots of rain here and there throughout the week, then leave your lawn be! It's strong enough to maintain itself - trust us.

Why is it bad to water a lawn every day?

It can be hard to restrain yourself from running to your hose or watering can for a "quick-fix" when you see parched patches appearing on your once-lush lawn, but it's important to remember that well-established lawns are extremely responsive to weather.

Usually, there will be enough rain over to maintain your healthy lawn without any intervention from you. Lawns are surprisingly reactive to external factors!

If your location is having a particularly hot period, then there's no harm in giving your lawn a top-up watering every now and then. But this definitely shouldn't be every day.

How often should I water my lawn in summer?

There is no definitive answer for this frequently asked lawn query, as it depends on your area's weather. Apparently, choosing when to water your lawn should be a decision guided by the current appearance of your lawn alongside the rainfall history of your location.

If you want to stay on top of your lawn's needs and how often you should water your lawn, keep an eye on your local weather forecast. For instance, is your area going to have a prolonged hot and dry spell without rain any time soon? If so, be prepared to give your lawn an occasional watering to keep it healthy and hydrated.
