beautiful lawn in the sunshine

Have you been peering out of your window and noticing that your lawn isn’t really growing and is starting to look… a little bit brown and sad?

Perhaps it’s time you treated your lawn to our lawn scarification service! Lawn scarification is a great way to remove moss and thatch that has developed over the surface of your lawn, allowing fresh, green grass to grow through!

One of our clients, a loyal customer for many years now, recently asked us to carry out our lawn scarification service on her lawn. She was really pleased with the service we provided and even answered a few questions about her experience. Keep reading to see what she thought…

Why did you choose Lawn & Weed Expert?

We have been using Lawn & Weed Expert for many years.  We are happy with their service and find them to be very reliable and great value for money.

What problems were you experiencing before you had your lawn scarified?

There was a lot of dead moss in the lawn which was brown and unsightly and was stopping new grass from growing through.

What was the scarification process like? Did it take long?

It took one to two hours and was no hassle at all.  All the dead moss was put into the garden waste wheelie bin and we put that out on the next collection.

Was the scarification service successful? How does your lawn look now?

The scarification service was thorough and very successful.  I cannot see any dead moss in the lawn now.  It did not take long for the grass to recover and for the new seeds to grow through because we also had it re-seeded.  I would say it only took three to four weeks for the lawn to look normal again.

Would you recommend Lawn & Weed Expert’s scarification service to others?

Yes, I would recommend the scarification service!

We are so pleased that our scarification service lived up to our lovely client’s expectations! Our scarification service works wonders for lack-lustre lawns. Want to enquire about our lawn scarification service? Click the button below to find out more!

If you own horses or are involved in the day-to-day running of a paddock, you’re probably aware of the dangers of ragwort. If not, it’s about time you became aware – it can be fatal!

In the UK, the most common form of horse poisoning is due to ragwort ingestion. As such, it’s one perilous plant you won’t want to have on your land.

Find out about the dangers of ragwort and, more importantly, how to protect your horses from this deadly weed now as we get to the root of the problem in this blog.

Ragwort and Horses

Also known as Senecio jacobea, ragwort is a common weed that crops up from early spring, characterised by bright yellow flowers with ragged edges.

Ragwort to horses is like chocolate to dogs: ragwort is toxic to horses and can have a quick and debilitating effect on a horse’s health.

The results of ragwort poisoning in horses can be spotted early due to weight loss, even if the horse is eating normally.

Ragwort attacks the horse’s liver and can cause the horse to go blind if not treated. This can eventually result in collapse and even death.

What’s more, under the Animal Welfare Act, landowners can face hefty fines and even imprisonment if they allow ragwort to grow on grazing areas.

Ragwort Spraying

At Lawn & Weed Expert, we can keep your land clear of ragwort efficiently and effectively, helping you to keep your horses fit and healthy.

Our comprehensive weed spraying service doesn’t just eradicate the visible portion of the weed, we tackle the weed right down to the ground and beyond.

Using specialist weed control products that aren’t readily available to the general public, our team of weed removal experts are fully equipped to handle any ragwort worries you may have.

Better still, our treatment methods can not only kill and remove the ragwort from your property, but it can also improve the quality of the grazing area, controlling other weeds at the same time, leaving your just grass and clover for a hearty horsey mealtime.

What are you waiting for? Eliminate your ragwort problem today and give your horses fifty shades of graze that won’t leave you having a mare.

Did you know that all products used to protect plants in your garden must be authorised by the Chemicals Regulations Directorate? It’s true!

Each product must go through a strict testing process prior to hitting the shelves, ensuring that all pesticides, fungicides and herbicides are safe and won’t cause damage to the environment.

This applies to all plant protection products (PPPs), including those used to control weeds; however, it’s not the only bit of red tape to be found when it comes to weed control.

There are also a variety of laws and legislations when it comes to the actual use of pesticides and weed killers too – particularly when it comes to professional weed services.

To keep you in the know and out of trouble, here’s the ins and outs of the whacky world of weed control.

weed killer license

For Your Ivy Only

If you fancy yourself as a regular James Bond of the backyard, fending off the spectre of weeds before they ravage your garden can be a great way to ensure the longevity of your lawn.

Luckily, you don’t need a licence to kill if you are tending to unwanted weeds on your own property. In fact, such odd jobs can help save your grass from the jaws of death.

However, when it comes to hiring a professional that charges for such a service, whoever is providing that service is going to need a valid weed killer licence to do so.

Even some professional-grade weed killer products come with a requirement for a professional applicators licence, so take care when ordering weed killer online.

The Spray Who Loved Me

Weed removal services will need to be carried out by professionals that are qualified to do so. Commercial use of professional weed killer without a weed killer licence can result in prosecution.

The recognised industry qualification is the NPTC Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of Pesticides (aka PA1 and PA6).

The course itself typically involves two units: one theory and one practical. The completed course provides the individual with a lifetime qualification that allows them to safely use pesticides in public places.

The PA1 foundation unit is the theory side, covering legislation, health and safety requirements, precautions, product label information, safe handling and use of pesticide application.

The PA6A is the practical side, covering the manual handling and safe use of pesticides using knapsack sprayers. Additionally, completion of the PA6AW assessment allows you to apply pesticides near water.

The Weed Is Not Enough

When dealing with professional weed services, you may come across the term “grandfather rights”. This is in reference to a loophole that allowed those born before 31 December 1964 the ability to apply professional crop protection without a weed killer licence on their own or employer’s land.

However, the so-called “grandfather rights” exemption came to an end on 26 November 2015, with further implications coming into effect on 1 January 2019. As a result, all weed removal professionals need an individual licence to use weed killer commercially.
