green grass

It's easy to think that we take grass for granted. After all, it's everywhere, and it's hard to go a day without seeing any. Vast fields of grass have been the background for films, pieces of artwork and countless music videos. But what is it that makes it so beautiful? Specifically, what is it that makes grass green?

What makes grass green?

The chlorophyll within grass gives it its lush green colour. Chlorophyll is a pigment (natural colouring) that is present in all green plants for photosynthesis, and this pigment is what gives grass its green colour!

How does chlorophyll make grass green?

If you're here for the scientific answer, chlorophyll makes grass green as it absorbs red and blue light from the sun, resulting in a reflection that appears green.

Why is my grass not green?

If you find that your grass isn't green, this could be a sign that your lawn isn't receiving the nutrients it needs. There are many factors that can reduce the greenness of your grass, including:

  • Too much / too little fertiliser
  • Infrequent mowing
  • Too little water
  • A lack of nutrients in the soil
  • Pet urine

How can I make my grass green?

If you'd like to make your grass greener, we suggest that you follow this lawn care schedule which will ensure that your grass gets all the nutrients and care that it needs to thrive.

In early spring...

  • Aerate your grass to allow nutrients and oxygen to reach the roots of your grass.
  • Scarify your lawn to get rid of any left over dead moss and thatch.
  • De-weed your lawn and re-seed as needed.

In late spring...

  • Mow your lawn frequently but follow the 1/3 rule: never cut off more than a third of the grass's height in one go! Cutting more than 50% of the grass blade can stunt root growth.
  • Gradually lower the height of your mower until you reach your desired grass length.
  • Top Tip! You can leave your short lawn clippings on the lawn to act as a natural fertiliser.

In summer...

  • Mow regularly to keep up with your lawn growth.
  • Keep your mower blades sharp so you do not tear the grass.
  • Water your lawn after every cut.

In autumn...

  • Reduce how often you mow and allow it to grow.
  • Aerate areas of grass that show signs of wear and tear.
  • Use a slow-release autumn fertiliser to protect your grass throughout the colder temperatures.
