august lawn care tips

We're sure that many of you have garden parties, BBQs and pitchers of Pimms planned for the month of August. Of course, there are still a lot of restrictions on pubs and restaurants, so people are making the most of their gardens - which is great! With that in mind, we want to help you make sure your lawn is in tip-top condition before your guests arrive.

Summer is the time when your lawn will be growing most rapidly. The additional hours of sunshine and the occasional showers create the perfect conditions for your lawn to thrive, so extra steps should be taken to stop your lawn from looking unkempt and unruly.

It might seem a little early to be thinking about the damaging effects of autumn and winter, but the effort you put in now can really help to prepare your lawn for colder months ahead. So what lawn care activities should you be planning to do this month?

Mowing the Lawn

Mowing your lawn in August depends heavily on the type of weather in your area. If the weather is incredibly hot and dry, you should mow your lawn using a long blade setting. The longer blades of grass will provide some cover from the baking sun and will help to preserve what little moisture there is.

Some of you may have a wet and warm August on the horizon. If this is the case, your lawn will start to flourish! it's important that you monitor the length of the grass and keep on top of mowing at regular intervals. You may need to give it a trim twice a week to keep things looking neat!

If you're one of the unlucky people who's expecting nothing but cloud and rain, then you should be on the lookout for a resurgence of moss. If it looks like your lawn is suffering, feel free to book one of our moss control treatments.

Keeping Weeds at Bay

Taking your eye off the ball for as little as a few weeks can lead to a huge rise in the number of weeds in your garden. Dandelions, cloves and nettles can really spoil your lawn, so make sure you're keeping an eye out for them throughout August.

Pulling them up by hand is a sure way to remove the surface issue and get rid of the eye-sore, but it won't necessarily treat the root system underground. If you want to avoid these weeds returning again in the upcoming months you really need to get to the source of the problem.

That's where our weed control service comes into play. We use a broad-spectrum herbicide to eliminate weeds in an effective, efficient and safe way. We highly recommend booking this service in August because this is when lawns grow most vigorously.

Fertiliser

Keeping your lawn healthy has a lot to do with what you feed it! In the summer months, you should increase the levels of phosphorous and potassium (for overall health) while decreasing the amount of nitrogen (that stimulates growth). This helps keep up with the demand for nutrients while your lawn without forcing your lawn to grow too rapidly.

Here at Lawn and Weed Expert, we favour slow-release lawn fertiliser because it means you can spend less time worrying about keeping on top of it! Learn more about our lawn fertiliser services

As well as keeping your lawn fed, it's important that you give it plenty of water too (especially on hot days). We've covered everything you need to know about watering your lawn in this blog.
