garden lawn

Summer is here! And lots of people are spending more and more time in their gardens. Our gardens are a place of relaxation, socialisation, and fun - so, of course we want them to look fresh and inviting. One way you can do this is through having lush, healthy lawn turf. If you're thinking of embarking on a lawn turfing project this summer, you might be wondering how thick should lawn turf be? Don't worry, because we have the answers for you!

What's the perfect lawn turf thickness?

When browsing turf options for your garden, ensure that the soil depth is at least 1 ¼ -1 ½ inches, and that the grass is around 2 inches in length. At Lawn & Weed Expert, we prepare our soil before making our turf, so that it is of the highest quality for your garden.

When we do this, we make sure that the soil is at least 4-6 inches deep to aid grass growth - this is because the soil supplies water and essential nutrients to make it rich and thriving for your garden.

Why does grass need a lot of soil to grow?

We ensure that our grass has grown in thick soil, because if it is less than 4-6 inches, the grass will not gain enough nutrients to be strong and healthy. There is also a risk that it could fall suspect to drought if the soil is too shallow; due to this, it can dry out very quickly and cause patching on your lawn!

What makes 'good' soil?

A good soil should have the following features to ensure your grass grows to its maximum capacity and lushness:

  • Balanced nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) and micro-nutrients
  • Good drainage
  • High water-holding capacity
  • Sufficient depth
