What is lawn top dressing?

Lawn top dressing is the process of spreading additional soil over the surface of your existing lawn to alter the nature of your topsoil and significantly improve your lawn's growing conditions.

The materials that you choose to add to your lawn's surface will eventually become a part of the root zone, therefore it's important to choose a mix that will blend in with your soil over time.

Why top dress your lawn?

As we've touched upon above, top dressing has a number of significant benefits for your lawn. These include:

  • Helping to create a smoother surface
  • Improves the structure of the soil
  • Enhances germination and growth when overseeding
  • Assists in managing lawn thatch

When should I top dress my lawn?

Now that you know what lawn top dressing is and why it's important, the next thing to understand is when you need to do it.

Ideally, top dressing your lawn will take place after some form of renovation has taken place, such as aeration as this will stimulate and encourage root growth. The conditions will also need to be right. Top dress your lawn when grass growth is at its highest, usually when there is plenty of sun, rain and warmth. Spring and autumn are often the best times to top dress your lawn.

A sufficient lawn care programme that involves top dressing would look something like this:

  1. Rake or scarify to remove moss or thatch

  2. Aeration to relieve compact soil

  3. Top dress to even out the lawn's surface, work new soil into the existing soil and provide ideal soil contact for new seeds

  4. Overseed to grow new grass and help the lawn recover

  5. Fertilise to give new seeds get nutrients to germinate and grow
