lawn wetting

The weather can have an enormous effect on the health and appearance of your lawn. We've all seen what grass looks like after a prolonged dry spell - so it's important to be prepared for whatever conditions the next summer season is likely to bring.

It may seem a bit early in the year to start worrying about drought, but lawn care is all about planning ahead. By applying what is called a 'lawn wetting agent' to your grass before summer arrives, you can significantly reduce the impact of hot and dry weather on your garden lawn.

What does a lawn wetting agent do?

A lawn wetting agent helps your lawn to tolerate long periods of dry weather.

Wetting agents make it easier for water to penetrate into (and be held within) the soil. This means you can use less water when watering your lawn, and it doesn't matter quite as much if there's little to no rainfall because water is more readily available to the grass roots!

EXPERT TIP: Get those water butts in place now and start saving rain to use on your garden during the dry summer months!

Applying a lawn wetting agent is a good way to prepare your grass for times when there won't be much moisture available. Wetting agents also help to stimulate better root development.

Note that lawn wetting agents are NOT a substitute for water, and even if you do apply a wetting agent, your lawn may still develop brown spots when the weather's dry.

How does a lawn wetting agent work?

A lawn wetting agent is made up of a surface-active molecule.

This molecule is able to reduce the surface tension of water, allowing the grass to take in more water for enhanced growth.

Scientifically, the wetting agent reduces the bond between water molecules, allowing them to travel into the grass easily.

When to apply lawn wetting agents

You should apply lawn wetting agents in late spring, ready for the summer months.
